The steps to Opening or Expanding Your Business in Branchburg Township: The first step to doing business in Branchburg Township is to contact Township professionals to set up a courtesy meeting which allows new business to meet with the Economic Development Committee. Call the Township at (908) 526-1300 or email business@branchburg.nj.us.

Whether a business approaches the Economic Development Committee directly or approaches the Township through Land Use, Engineering, Code Enforcement or another Department, the Economic Development Committee will follow through in the development application and permit process in guiding and assisting business.

Economic Development Committee Services

When current or potential Branchburg businesses are dealing with either Township departments or outside agencies, the Economic Development Committee will offer the following services:

1. Provide detailed information on permits required and on forms, procedures, and timetables for obtaining such permits;
2. Provide specific contact information (name, position. telephone number, address) at each permitting
3. Call and arrange introductions or meetings, if requested;
4. Attend meetings with the business and the agency, if requested;
5. Monitor agency response;
6. Get business feedback on the permit process and how it might be improved.

A Business Wants to Move into New Space

Site Plan approval will be required for businesses that propose to develop a new lot. The usual first step in the site plan application process is a meeting with the Township professional staff (Municipal Land Use Officer, Planner and Township Engineer). The Planning Board Secretary will notify the Economic Development Committee of the meeting. In advance of the meeting, the Economic Development Committee will reach out to the business and make sure that all necessary information is provided to the business.

  • The Economic Development Committee will attend the meeting.
  • The Economic Development Committee will supply the applicant specific information about other governmental agencies which may be required to review an application.
  • The Economic Development Committee will assist and stay with the business all the way through the process until the project is complete.

A Business Wants to Move into Existing Space

  • When a business proposes to move into existing space, the business applies to Code Enforcement for a Continuing Certificate of Occupancy (CCO) and to the Land Use Office for a Certificate of Use.
  • When the business submits an application for the CCO, the Code Enforcement Department will notify the Economic Development Committee.
  • The Economic Development Committee will contact the business and offer to assist the applicant with the permit process.
  • The Economic Development Committee will assist and stay with the business all the way through the process until the project is complete.
A Business Wants to Move into Existing Space, Requiring Renovation

  • When a business wishes to renovate a commercial property and submits an application for a building permit, the Code Enforcement Department will notify the Economic Development Committee of the permit application.  A zoning permit may also be required depending on the renovation.
  • The Economic Development Committee will contact the business and offer to assist the applicant with the permit process.
  • The Economic Development Committee will assist and stay with the business all the way through the process until the project is complete.
